Sustainable WA 2023 Season Wrap-Up

Sustainable WA 2023 Season Wrap-Up

Grape Post Article

As we wrap-up the 2023 season for the Sustainable WA certification program, we are thrilled to announce the first two years of Sustainable WA certified growers, and the first year of Sustainable WA certified wine out in the marketplace! This was particularly hopeful as it highlights a commitment by growers choosing to make this investment to certify as Sustainable WA in 2023 in the face of a challenging year. The Sustainable WA certification program is the first-statewide sustainability certification program. A rigorous, science-based program, built by industry and experts in the field of sustainability and with continuous improvement in mind. To be certified as Sustainable WA is to proudly demonstrate that an operation covers all pillars of sustainability— environmentally sound, socially equitable, and economically viable.

This upward success for the Sustainable WA certification program is possible in thanks to Washington Winegrowers Association and its 20+ years of building and supporting this program alongside industry partners. The Sustainable WA certification program demonstrates the power of collaboration across our Washington wine industry, leading to success when we work together:

  • Washington State Wine Commission is lead on branding,
  • Washington Wine Industry Foundation raised funding to facilitate building this program,
  • Washington Wine Institute communicated value to policymakers,
  • Sustainable WA Governance Council provides insight on policy and direction for the program,
  • Sustainable WA Technical Committee provides educational feedback on the certification Standard, and
  • Our Washington Winegrowers Association executed the build-out and manages ongoing operation of the program.

The collaboration carries on as our Sustainable WA certification program continues to develop.

Thank you to the early leaders of the Sustainable WA certification program—the growers who embrace sustainable practices to seek Sustainable WA certification of their vineyard operations, the wineries that create beautiful Washington wines using Sustainable WA certified winegrapes, and all who have made the program better with their input.

The Sustainable WA program is off to a great start, with a total of 32 growers, covering approximately 17,580 acres for the 2023 season of the Sustainable WA certification program. These growers have vineyard operations with Sustainable WA certified winegrapes:
